This project, located in Albany, New York, is a redevelopment of the Colonie Center into an iteration of the Exedra concept. The scope of this project primarily included master planning, as well as preliminary designs of the nine different buildings on the site.
The Exedra is a space designed to create a true community utilizing an existing shopping mall. With traditional malls failing around the country, a new idea was needed that could maximize the existing structure of a mall while giving it a more expansive purpose.
The Exedra combines dining, entertainment, housing, shopping, and community-focused spaces. It produces a hybrid of indoor and outdoor circulation and gathering locations, creating a variety of atmospheres on a single site designed for both permanent occupants and visitors. There are also strong connections to surrounding infrastructure and buildings, enabling many ways for people to access the site.
While this primary iteration of the Exedra is located in Albany, NY, the concept is an adaptable one. It can be used on different existing mall sites around the country, promoting a sustainable adaptation to these massive buildings, and saving large volumes of materials from landfills in the process.
